Health effects associated with exposure to low-frequency electromagnetic fields

Today, ANSES is publishing a new expert appraisal on the health effects associated with exposure to low-frequency electromagnetic fields. In view of the data available, the Agency is reiterating its 2010 conclusions on the possible association between exposure to low-frequency electromagnetic fields and the long-term risk of childhood leukaemia. It is also restating its recommendation not to build new schools close to very-high voltage power lines. At the same time, the Agency stresses the need to better manage occupational exposure for employees who could be exposed to high levels of electromagnetic fields, particularly pregnant women.

REGUMATE EQUINE, a veterinary medicinal product for horses, should be used with caution

The French Agency for Veterinary Medicinal Products, within ANSES, is calling for continued vigilance when administering the veterinary medicinal product REGUMATE EQUINE to control the oestrus cycle in mares. Because of its hormonal action this product can cause adverse effects, especially in women who administer it to their horses. Therefore, women who are pregnant or likely to become pregnant should not administer the product themselves. In addition, the Agency reminds users of the importance of observing the product’s special precautions for use.

ANSES recommends restricting persulphates in hair products

ANSES is publishing its expert appraisal work on ammonium, potassium and sodium persulphate substances used mainly in hair bleaching products. The Agency has concluded that the use of persulphates poses health risks to hairdressing professionals and consumers, as these sensitising substances cause allergic respiratory and skin reactions. In view of the reported effects and disorders, ANSES recommends that exposure of professionals and the general public to products containing persulphates be reduced to a minimum.

On 13 and 14 March 2018, the Regulated Products Assessment Department (DEPR) of the French Agency for Food, Environmental and Occupational Health & Safety (ANSES) hosted a Workshop on Toxicological Risk Assessment of Plant Protection Products. The organising committee for the event was made up of ANSES along with the Austrian Agency for Health and Food Safety (AGES), the German Federal Institute for Risk Assessment (BfR), the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) and the European Commission (Directorate-General Health and Food Safety). This Workshop was a follow-up to one hosted by AGES in 2015. The meeting was attended by participants from the regulatory authorities of some 20 European countries, plus representatives of the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA), the European Chemicals Agency (ECHA), the European Commission and stakeholders. Central topics were: exposure assessment of operators, workers, bystanders and residents; estimating dermal absorption of products as part of exposure assessment; the assessment of cumulative and combined risks; the toxicological classification of plant protection products; consideration of co-formulants. The principal conclusions of the Workshop were: the harmonisation of risk assessment methods should be continued; areas for improvement have been identified, in particular situations where the estimation of exposure needs to be better harmonised between Member States; the adoption of harmonised methodology to facilitate the implementation of combined risk assessment; the new European guidance document on the estimation of dermal absorption will reinforce the harmonisation and robustness of evaluations; harmonised guidelines must be adopted for alternatives to animal testing in the evaluation

Pinnatoxins: emerging marine biotoxins that should be monitored in shellfish

ANSES is today publishing its expert appraisal on pinnatoxins, a family of emerging marine biotoxins that have been detected in mussels from Mediterranean lagoons. When ingested by mice, these marine biotoxins cause acute neurotoxic effects. ANSES used the available consumption data to estimate the exposure of shellfish consumers according to various scenarios. It is alerting the public authorities to the possibility of a health risk in the event of consumption of pinnatoxin-contaminated shellfish from Mediterranean lagoons, particularly from the Ingril area in the Hérault département of France. It is also recommending that these emerging biotoxins be taken into account in the monitoring of shellfish production areas. This work represents a major scientific breakthrough in the field of emerging toxins.

ANSES announces the withdrawal of marketing authorisations for fungicidal plant protection products containing epoxiconazole in France

ANSES is today publishing its opinion on the endocrine-disrupting nature of the active substance epoxiconazole used in fungicides. On the basis of the criteria of the new European legislation on endocrine disruptors, the Agency confirmed the endocrine-disrupting properties of this substance, which is also included in the list of candidates for substitution at European level. It believes that products containing epoxiconazole need to be withdrawn from the market, and has notified the marketing authorisation holders of its intention.
