Initial ANSES opinion on the assessment of food risks associated with the industrial fire at the Lubrizol plant

The large plume of smoke produced by the fire at the Lubrizol plant in Rouen, France on 26 September affected several French départements . The authorities rapidly commissioned measurements and sampling in order to assess the impact of any hazardous substances that may have been emitted.

An update from ANSES and ADEME on scientific advances to improve air quality

On 17 October 2019, ANSES and ADEME are organising a day of scientific meetings devoted to the topic of air quality. This is a major public health issue, whether it concerns indoor or outdoor air. In order to preserve and improve air quality, we need to characterise the sources of contaminants in air and the associated exposure, and gain a better understanding of their health effects. This symposium will provide a broad overview of the recent scientific advances in this field and offer examples of practical solutions for tackling the issue of air quality.

ANSES is publishing the results of the Pesti’home study on the use of pesticides in the home

ANSES organised the Pesti’home study to find out more about how French people use pesticides to protect their homes, gardens and pets. The study provided a comprehensive overview of pesticides used in the home, along with the conditions of use and user profiles. This is the first major nationwide study in this field, with over 1,500 households interviewed and more than 5,400 products identified. The results shed new light on actual conditions of storage and use and will help us to better assess population exposure to pesticides.

ANSES and UPEC consolidate their cooperation

On Thursday 3 October, Roger Genet, Director General of ANSES, and Jean-Luc Dubois-Randé, President of UPEC (University of Paris-Est-Créteil Val-de-Marne), signed a framework partnership agreement, strengthening the two organisations' scientific cooperation in key areas of the "One Health" approach and research. This partnership covers the major areas of expertise shared by the two organisations, such as chronic and infectious diseases, environmental and occupational health risks, and animal feed and health.

Bovine tuberculosis: ANSES reviews wildlife control measures

For almost 20 years, France has been officially free of bovine tuberculosis, a disease primarily affecting cattle herds. To maintain this status, surveillance and control actions aiming to bring the disease under control have been taken in certain at-risk areas. They include measures targeting infected herds, wild animals and the surrounding environment. After receiving a request from four associations, ANSES assessed the control measures applied to wildlife, especially badgers. ANSES confirms the importance of coordinated actions to effectively combat bovine tuberculosis and reiterates that the preventive culling of badgers and other wild species is in no way justified in disease-free areas.

Exposure to cadmium: ANSES proposes limit values to better protect consumers and workers

Cadmium, a substance that is omnipresent in the environment, can pose health risks to humans, who are exposed mainly through food. In order to limit the exposure of the population, it appears essential to control cadmium intakes from agricultural activities, in particular the application of fertilisers, including mineral phosphate fertilisers. Today, ANSES is publishing its expert appraisal work, whose results aim to further protect consumers and workers. To that end, the Agency has established a new health-based guidance value (HBGV) by ingestion and recommends lowering cadmium levels in fertilisers in order to limit accumulation in soils, transfers to plants and ultimately consumer exposure to cadmium through food. ANSES reiterates that some population groups are overexposed to cadmium through food and therefore stresses the need to implement protective measures to reduce cadmium intakes.

ANSES's work in protecting local residents when plant protection products are used

One of ANSES's main missions is to protect the public whenever plant protection products are used. The Agency estimates exposure and assesses health risks for workers and local residents as part of its work examining marketing authorisations. One of its priorities is to improve knowledge of the real impact on human and environmental health of pesticide use in agriculture. As such, it is currently involved in several major scientific studies.

Plant pests: three new European reference mandates for the ANSES Plant Health Laboratory

Three units of the Plant Health Laboratory (LSV) have been appointed European Union Reference Laboratories (EURL) for plant pests. The scope of the three mandates obtained concerns insects and mites, nematodes, and fungi and oomycota. With these three new European reference mandates, the ANSES LSV is consolidating its long-standing commitment to the control of pests regulated at European and global levels. These are actually the first plant pest mandates established for Europe, and come into force on 1 August 2019.

International ANSES-EFSA Scientific Conference Day

54 Quai de la Rapée, 75012 Paris
Public : oui
Maison de la RATP - Paris 12 ème
ANSES and EFSA are hosting an International Scientific Conference Day devoted to bee health and to the contribution of risk assessment research to the field . This is the 8th scientific event of this kind to be held on the topic of bee health and it will be co-hosted for the first time with the European Food Safety Authority. Approximately 300 people will attend the event and it will be an opportunity to highlight the synergy that we have fostered over time and the common vision that we share regarding the preservation of bee health and that of other pollinating insects. The purpose of this conference, which is open to a broad audience including bee keepers, research scientists, public decision-makers, private enterprises, and professional and media representatives, is to review the constructive proposals of both of our entities on the assessment of plant protection products and their impact on the health of bees and other pollinating insects. This event will also be devoted to presenting the research results of our Sophia Antipolis laboratory, with is also the European Union Reference Laboratory (EURL) for bee health, and the recent development at EFSA on holistic risk assessments of bee health including modelling and stakeholders’ engagement. A large part of the day will be given over to debate and discussion with the scientists from both ANSES and EFSA as well as with French and European stakeholders. The round-table at day’s end will be on the following topic: “Towards sustainable bee-keeping and agriculture: the need for alternative treatment methods and closer collaboration between bee-keepers and farmers”. It will be an opportunity for a wide range of players to present the worthy initiatives they have implemented at the regional level to improve the quality of the environment and preserve bee health. The event will be held at the Maison de la RATP (12 th arrondissement of Paris). As the number of attendees is limited, we advise you to sign up as soon as possible to be sure you will be able to share this day of information and discussion with us. Registration is closed but remains possible on the day of the event with our hostesses depending on the number of places available. Look at the conference! Click here
