An international scientific conference to provide an update on genomics for food safety

ANSES, the German Federal Institute for Risk Assessment (BfR), the National Food Institute of the Technical University of Denmark (DTU) and the Republic of Korea's National Institute of Food and Drug Safety Evaluation (NIFDS) are holding an international conference on the theme "Foodborne Pathogens & Whole Genome Sequencing: Impact on Public Health Protection", from Tuesday 26 to Thursday 28 March 2019 in Paris. This three-day high-level scientific symposium will bring together nearly 300 international stakeholders, researchers and experts to review advances in genomic technologies in the field of food safety.

Phytophthora ramorum: monitor its spread and eradicate contaminated sites

First detected in France in the Finistère region in May 2017, the plant pathogen Phytophthora ramorum poses a significant risk for many ornamental and forest-growing plants (rhododendrons, vibernum and larch trees). ANSES issues recommendations to monitor the spread of this fungus-like microorganism, prevent the risk of its introduction and eradicate outbreaks where it is already found.

ANSES and CIRAD strengthen their scientific cooperation dedicated to "One Health"

At the Paris International Agricultural Show today, Roger Genet, Director General of ANSES, and Michel Eddi, President Managing Director of CIRAD, signed a five-year framework partnership agreement. The two organisations are thus strengthening their numerous existing collaborations to improve knowledge of pathogens and pests and their vectors in the fields of animal health, plant health and food.

Giant hogweed: limit its proliferation in order to reduce risks to human health and the environment

Placed on the European Union's list of invasive species of concern, giant hogweed presents risks both to the flora of the environments it colonises and to human health. In response to this observation, ANSES was asked to summarise knowledge regarding this plant and make risk management recommendations. With its expert assessment work completed, the Agency recommends the creation of a monitoring system and the use of available control methods to eradicate giant hogweed populations in high-priority areas.

"Alternative" anti-scale processes: ANSES's recommendations

Today ANSES is publishing its opinion and report on so-called alternative anti-scale (Alt-AS) processes in drinking water distribution systems. The Agency stresses first of all that Alt-AS manufacturers and distributors have a responsibility to provide evidence of the safety and effectiveness of the processes and products they market, and expresses its disappointment at the limited data available in this regard. It recommends improving the information provided to consumers to enable them to make informed choices when purchasing drinking water treatment products and processes, developing the standardisation and certification of these processes, and updating the regulations.

Food allergies: improve information to prevent risks

With the constant changes in eating habits and the marketing of novel foods, food allergies continue to be a public health concern. As a result of its expert assessment work, ANSES found that there was a lack of data on the prevalence of food allergies in France. The Agency therefore delivers a series of recommendations to ensure better monitoring of food allergies, and recommends providing better information to doctors as well as to consumers subject to food allergies.

As a leading public agency responsible for the indivisible health of humans, animals and ecosystems, ANSES strives constantly to meet the challenges of agriculture today and in the future. For this 2019 edition of the Paris International Agricultural Show, "Water quality and fishery products" are the major theme on the ANSES stand. As an environment for living organisms and a source of nutrition in its own right, water is a common good and a major health and food issue, but also a challenge for our agriculture, which must adapt to climate change and changes in our lifestyles. Water is one of the key themes common to ANSES's wide range of activities.

Bee protection: ANSES makes recommendations to strengthen the regulatory framework

As part of the Government's action plan on plant protection products and reduced dependence on pesticides in agriculture, ANSES is today publishing the results of its expert appraisal and its recommendations to strengthen the regulatory framework for the protection of bees and other pollinating insects. The aim of these recommendations is to further reduce bee exposure to plant protection products.

ANSES recommends improving baby diaper safety

Today, ANSES published its assessment of the risks of chemicals found in baby diapers. Based on tests conducted on disposable diapers and their use, the Agency’s assessment highlighted several chemicals for which safety threshold values were exceeded. With regard to the possible risks of these chemicals to child health, ANSES recommends eliminating these latter or reducing their levels as much as possible in disposable diapers. The Agency also recommends reinforced monitoring of these chemicals in diapers already on the market. And last, ANSES emphasises the need for a more stringent regulatory framework for these products.
