The emergence and spread of bacterial strains that are resistant to antibiotics call into question the efficacy of these treatments. Preserving their efficacy is therefore a genuine public health challenge, requiring an integrated approach according to the One Health concept covering both humans and animals.

Every year, cases of use of antiparasitic products intended for pets to treat head lice in children are reported. The Agency emphasises that antiparasitic treatments, insecticides or acaricides for pets should never be used on human beings, especially children.

External parasites can cause serious illnesses in animals, or even lead to diseases that are transmissible to humans. To control and/or prevent these diseases, a range of veterinary medicinal products are available.

Created on 1 July 2010, the French Agency for Food, Environmental and Occupational Health & Safety (ANSES) is an independent scientific body which performs its risk assessment, reference and research activities in the fields of food safety and animal and plant health. Its core activity is the assessment of health risks in order to enable the public authorities to make informed decisions and in so doing to help ensure the health and safety of of the population both in its working and consumer activities

Antiparasitics, insecticides and anti-mite treatments intended for pets should never be used on humans, especially children. Veterinary medicinal products obtain marketing authorisation (MA) prior to marketing based on a risks vs benefits assessment for the animal they are to be used on. If the risks for humans have been identified and evaluated, it is only with regard to the risks for individuals who handle or administer the products.

ANSES has a network of nine reference and research laboratories located throughout France, close to industry. These laboratories operate in three main areas: animal health and welfare, food safety (chemical and microbiological) and plant health. They are internationally recognised in their respective fields of expertise: epidemiology, microbiology and antimicrobial resistance, toxins and physico-chemical contaminants. Thanks to their work in providing expertise, epidemiological monitoring, alerts and scientific and technical assistance, they play a vital role in understanding various threats and in collecting data from the network of accredited laboratories.
