Running European projects to advance knowledge

The work carried out by ANSES aims to develop knowledge and methodologies, discuss common work themes with partners and establish a network of organisations and experts, who can also contribute to the Agency’s various risk assessment activities.

ANSES coordinates large-scale European programmes

PARC

The goal of the European partnership for the assessment of risks from chemicals (PARC), co-funded by the EU’s Framework Programme for Research and Innovation for 2021–2027, “Horizon Europe”, is to design an assessment of the risks caused by new-generation chemicals to better protect health and the environment. PARC is coordinated by ANSES and has garnered unprecedented support, bringing together some 200 French and European players. PARC encompasses all aspects of chemical risk assessment, including improving the anticipation of emerging risks, better addressing combined risks, and supporting the effective implementation of new European public policy guidelines for the protection of health and the environment in response to major health and environmental challenges and in line with citizens’ expectations.

One Health EJP

Co-funded by the EU’s Framework Programme for Research and Innovation for 2014–2020, Horizon 2020, the One Health European Joint Programme (EJP) aimed to generate new knowledge on foodborne zoonoses, antimicrobial resistance and emerging risks. Implemented between 2018 and 2023, it contributed to strengthening collaboration among its 44 partners from 22 European countries in order to generate scientific data to support health risk analysis, assessment and management by national and European agencies and authorities. To this end, two internal calls for projects were issued in 2016 and 2019, resulting in the funding of 29 projects. A final internal call for projects  was organised in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, on the detection and characterisation of Sars-CoV-2, which led to the implementation of the 30th and final project. The collaboration between most of the One Health EJP partners continues today within the framework of the European One Health Association (formerly MED-VET-NET association).

The main European projects in which ANSES is involved

Research projects receiving European funding and/or carried out with European partners promote ANSES’s expertise and enable ANSES scientists to maintain their skills and expertise at the highest level. This involvement therefore contributes to enhancing support for risk assessment and the reference activities of laboratories.

ANSES teams participate in many European projects, mainly funded by the EU’s Framework Programmes for Research and Innovation (Horizon 2020, and since 2021, Horizon Europe), as well as by other funding sources such as the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA), ERA-NETs, Joint Programming Initiatives (JPIs) or bilateral calls from the French National Research Agency (ANR). Assessment of ANSES’s participation in “Horizon 2020”

Following the announcement of the results of the most recent calls for projects under the EU’s Framework Programme for Research and Innovation for 2014–2020, known as “Horizon 2020”, ANSES decided to evaluate the participation of its teams in projects funded under this programme.

ANSES teams from the laboratories as well as from the risk and regulated product assessment departments showed great motivation by consistently submitting around 10 to 15 proposals each year. At 28% of successful proposals out of the eligible submissions, ANSES’s success rate is almost double that of France for the Horizon 2020 programme as a whole. The projects funded under Horizon 2020 are collaborative projects carried out by ANSES teams with leading research organisations in the field, such as INSERM and INRAE in France, RIVM (National Institute for Public Health and the Environment, Netherlands), WUR (Wageningen University & Research, Netherlands) or DTU (Danish Technical University) in Europe.

Completed projects coordinated by ANSES

Since 2004, ANSES teams have become recognised as the “go-to” coordinators of European projects on priority topics.  ANSES staff has expertise in leading European consortiums, particularly in the context of large-scale European funding programmes such as the EU’s Framework Programmes for Research and Innovation and the EU’s health programmes. Some of these projects have continued as active networks at European level, resulting in the implementation of several initiatives on the topics addressed.

Valitest project: robust methods for detecting pests

VALITEST: The project entitled “Validation of diagnostic tests to support plant health” (2018–2021), funded by the EU’s Framework Programme for Research and Innovation, Horizon 2020, brought together 16 European partners, including research organisations, manufacturers of diagnostic kits and the European and Mediterranean Plant Protection Organisation (EPPO). Its aim was to produce performance data on analytical methods to target plant pests, including commercial kits, as well as provide recommendations for enhancing the reliability of tests used for their detection and identification. The project evaluated 83 tests, which led to the harmonisation of diagnostic practices for 11 plant pests. Find out more about the project results.
