ANSES at the 2018 Paris International Agricultural Show: collective expert appraisal devoted to health
Like every year, ANSES will be at the Paris International Agricultural Show (SIA), a key annual event providing the opportunity to meet with its partners and the general public. As an agency responsible for health risk assessment, ANSES participates fully in this event, to promote its work devoted to health and safety. The Agency invites visitors to find out more about its activities in food safety, animal health and welfare, and plant health. The programme for this 55th edition of the International Agricultural Show highlights all the Agency's different missions and includes meetings with professionals, presentations and fun, educational workshops. Please note that all of ANSES's workshops, events and presentations, both on the stand and in the Professionals area, will be held in French.
ANSES’s core activity is risk assessment and research in order to enable the public authorities to make informed decisions. This is based on the application of independent scientific expertise, and relies on the work of the Agency's eleven research and reference laboratories, located throughout France near the related production sectors. More than 1000 scientists, along with 850 external experts, work to further the knowledge that is essential for anticipating and managing risks in the areas of human, animal and plant health, and food safety. ANSES shares its results, making them as widely accessible as possible. Each year, therefore, the Paris International Agricultural Show provides a valuable opportunity for the Agency to meet and exchange with the general public, stakeholders from the world of agriculture, and its partners.
In an area devoted to professionals and designed for meetings and discussions on the Agency's work, our scientists will answer questions on topics such as the marketing of regulated products, worker protection, and tools it makes available to professionals, in particular for reporting health alerts.
The Paris International Agricultural Show is also a chance for the Agency to interact directly with parents and younger visitors. There will be educational workshops in which children will conduct “investigations” to show them how our experts work in an emergency to address public health issues and protect the population, as well as two storytelling sessions for young children, in addition to a tablet-based quiz enabling visitors to test their knowledge on food and hygiene in the kitchen.

Presentation: L’Anses au service d’une alimentation saine et durable ("ANSES: working for a healthy, sustainable diet") by
Charlotte Grastilleur, Scientific Director for Food Safety and Deputy Director for Risk Assessment in Dietary Health, Saturday 24 February at 14:30, in the Ateliers pratiques ("Practical workshops") area, Hall 1, Aisle R, Stand 036.
Non-stop in our lab area:
- in the "Food safety" workshop, help our experts conduct an enquiry to find the cause of a food poisoning event occurring after a birthday party;
- find out what scientists do to identify the disease responsible for sudden death in a cow in the "Animal health" workshop;
- in the "Plant health" workshop, you will be invited to take part in an investigation to understand why a town's inhabitants are complaining of allergies and what needs to be done to prevent this, mainly through the use of a biocontrol solution;
- another workshop will investigate biocontrol solutions in greater depth and show visitors how the use of micro-organisms, insects and even pheromones can help protect crops.
Join us under the ANSES tree for two wonderful storytelling sessions, every 15 minutes:
- Au pays des bulles (“In the land of bubbles”) is intended to teach young children about the importance of exercise to stay healthy;
- Entre deux eaux (“Mid-water”) will get them to think about the importance of using water responsibly.
And lastly, test your knowledge:
How to make sense of food labelling, why you should comply with the use-by date, when you should wash your hands and which food has the highest vitamin C content… You will find answers to all these questions on the tablet placed at your disposal under our tree.
Films playing on a loop will tell you more about ANSES and its missions, and our scientists will be on hand to answer all your questions.
